Simple Boating Rules: Guide to Navigating Pensacola Waters Safely

Renting a pontoon boat in Pensacola is the ultimate way to spend a day on the water, but staying safe requires knowing the basic “rules of the road.” Just like driving a car, boating has specific traffic laws designed to prevent collisions and keep everyone safe.
Before you captain your Pensacola Pontoons rental out into the beautiful emerald waters, let’s review the essential navigation rules you need to know.

1. The Core Golden Rule: Avoid Collisions At All Costs

Regardless of who technically has the right-of-way, every boat captain is legally responsible for taking action to avoid a collision. Always keep your eyes on the horizon, scan for other vessels, and never assume another driver sees you.

2. Passing Other Boats (Head-On Situations)

When two motorized boats are meeting head-on, or nearly head-on, neither vessel has the right-of-way.
  • The Rule: Both vessels should alter their course to the right (starboard).
  • The Result: You will pass each other port-side to port-side (left side to left side), just like driving a car on a two-lane road.

3. Overtaking and Passing Another Vessel

If you are coming up behind another boat and want to pass them, you are the Give-Way vessel.
  • The Rule: The boat being overtaken has the right-of-way and should maintain their speed and direction.
  • The Action: You may pass them on either side, but you must steer completely clear of them and watch your wake as you go by.

4. Crossing Paths (The Danger Zone)

When two boats are crossing paths, the boat on the right has the right-of-way.
  • The Stand-On Vessel: If a boat is approaching from your left (port), you have the right-of-way. Maintain your course and speed.
  • The Give-Way Vessel: If a boat is approaching from your right (starboard), they have the right-of-way. You must slow down, stop, or change course to pass safely behind them.

5. Hierarchy of the Waterway

Pontoons and Tritoons are highly maneuverable motorized vessels, which means you must yield to less agile watercraft. As a general rule, you must give the right-of-way to:
  • Boats anchored, fishing, or unable to move easily.
  • Sailboats under sail power alone.
  • Paddleboards, kayaks, and canoes.

6. Navigating Channels and Buoys

When navigating back into a channel or bay from open water, remember the famous maritime phrase: “Red, Right, Returning.”
  • Keep the red buoys on your right side when returning from sea or traveling upstream.
  • Keep the green buoys on your left side.
