Pensacola’s Colonial & Revolutionary Legacy
Long before Florida became a U.S. state, Pensacola was a coveted port city with strategic importance. By the late 1700s, control of Pensacola shifted between European powers—including the Spanish, British, and French—each recognizing its value as the gateway to the Gulf of Mexico.
During the American Revolution, Pensacola was the capital of British West Florida. In 1781, Spanish forces under General Bernardo de Gálvez launched a daring campaign to capture Pensacola from the British. The Siege of Pensacola culminated in a decisive Spanish victory, which helped divert British troops and resources away from the American colonies. This victory directly supported the American cause, as Spain was an ally to France, which in turn supported the Continental Army.
Did you know Gálvez’s campaign was so important that he was later honored by the U.S. Congress as a hero of the Revolution? Today, Gálvez’s name lives on in local landmarks and statues, including the Galvez monument in downtown Pensacola.
